“The Gate to Hell” is located in Derweze, Turkmenistan. While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 230 ft. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, they decided to burn it. Geologists had hoped the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today.
At least once a year, I like to bring in some of my Kevin’s Famous Chili. The trick is to undercook the onions. Everybody is going to get to know each other in the pot. I’m serious about this stuff. I’m up the night before pressing garlic and dicing whole tomatoes. I toast my own Ancho chilies. It’s a recipe passed down from Malones for generations. It’s probably the thing I do best.
